The Central Water Authority (CWA) maintains a multi-tiered filtration network across Mauritius, delivering approximately 1,000,000 m\u00b3 of treated water daily <\/strong>produced from water treatment plants, containerised pressure filters, boreholes and pumping stations. It operates a vital water treatment infrastructure across Mauritius to ensure safe, potable water for both drinking and irrigation purposes.<\/p>

Filtration Technologies & Distribution<\/strong><\/p>

  • Rapid Gravity Sand Filtration:<\/strong> Deployed across all 7 main Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) to handle high-volume primary filtration.<\/li><\/ul>
      • Coagulation & Flocculation:<\/strong> Aluminium sulfate (alum) is introduced to aggregate suspended solids into larger flocs.<\/li>
      • Sedimentation:<\/strong> Flocs settle to the bottom of clarification basins under gravitational force.<\/li>
      • Sand Filtration:<\/strong> Removes remaining particulates through fine sand media beds.<\/li>
      • Disinfection:<\/strong> Primary and final disinfection across all treatment plants is carried out using chlorine dosing to eliminate pathogens.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
        • Slow Sand Filtration:<\/strong> Used specifically at the La Marie WTP<\/strong> and Pailles WTP<\/strong> where water passes through biological and physical filter layers to remove organic matter and impurities.<\/li><\/ul>
          • Containerised Pressure Filtration (CPF) Plants:<\/strong>
            • Scale:<\/strong> 60 Nos. operational units spread across the country.<\/li>
            • Output:<\/strong> Contributes approximately 120,000 m\u00b3\/day.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>

              2. La Marie WTP \u2013 130,000m3<\/sup><\/li>

              5. Pailles WTP \u2013 85,000m3<\/sup><\/li>
              6. Piton du Milieu WTP \u2013 35,000m3<\/sup><\/li>
              7. Rivi\u00e8re du Poste WTP \u2013 20,000m3<\/sup><\/li><\/ol>

                Quality Control & Emergency Protocols<\/strong><\/p>

                • Continuous Monitoring:<\/strong> On-site mini-laboratories perform hourly operational testing. The CWA Central Laboratory conducts daily nationwide sampling for pH, turbidity, and free chlorine levels.<\/li>
                • Regulatory Oversight:<\/strong> Water quality compliance is independently enforced by the Ministry of Health according to World Health Organization (WHO) standards.<\/li>
                • Contamination Contingency Plan:<\/strong> In the event of a quality anomaly, isolation protocols are immediately executed\u2014sealing facility inlets and outlets\u2014followed by targeted system flushing and safety re-testing.<\/li>
                • Environmental Impact Mitigation:<\/strong> Heavy rainfall and high river turbidity temporarily trigger automated shutdowns at affected Containerized Pressure Filter stations to safeguard filtration media and water quality.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
